Your Wellness Programme Isn’t Working If… Common mistakes and what to fix.
Wellness classes are becoming more common on set these days.
But just having a programme doesn’t mean it’s working.
Through our work across productions of all scales, we’ve found four common reasons wellness efforts fall flat — even with the best of intentions:
1. Support is offered, but not accessible.
- Mental health services are scheduled during wrap.
- Yoga and classes, no one has time to attend.
- Initiatives that exist in theory, but not in the rhythm of crew life.
2. Access needs are raised, but not met.
- Accommodations are promised, then delayed for weeks.
- Support that gets stuck in the system — or delegated away.
3. Wellbeing perks are offered, but basic needs are ignored.
- Chair massages, but cold meals on the floor.
- Mindfulness apps, but no warm space to take a break.
4. People are asked for feedback, but nothing changes. And eventually, they stop giving it.
The data backs it up:
- 60% of the crew who felt unsupported also couldn't take enough breaks.
- 57% said their dietary/religious needs weren’t met.
Here’s the truth:
A good wellness programme doesn’t start with meditation.
It starts with meeting people’s fundamental needs — rest, nourishment, clarity — and responding when they speak.
When people feel seen, heard, and have access to the help they need, programs can truly thrive and create a positive impact.
